Berenice
E. Kleiman
Prior to Herb’s
stroke, Berenice Kleiman served as executive vice-president of Kleiman Associates Inc., a marketing communications company
specializing in high-tech companies. (She and Herb fought over the title of president but he won the coin toss). Most of her
four decades in marketing encompassed senior counsel in issues management, crisis communications, corporate positioning,
strategic marketing, and media relations. Active in professional and community organizations, she is past president of both
the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the board of a local organization that aids victims
of domestic violence. She is also a long-time member of the Cleveland Press Club. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Syracuse University
with majors in political science and education, she attended the University of Maryland School of Law and later earned a Master
of Arts degree in history from The Ohio State University. The stroke curtailed her status as a part-time avocational student
at Cleveland-Marshall School of Law.
Herbert S. Kleiman
Herb
Kleiman served as president of Kleiman Associates Inc., a firm he and Berenice formed in 1987. For four decades he worked
closely with top managements, as a high-technology management consultant, Wall Street securities analyst, and then as a business
leader and community strategist. His numerous articles, op-ed columns, and speeches have helped translate and position complex
and often fast-changing technologies for audiences with minimal technical background. As a member of the Cleveland Engineering
Society he chaired its Management of Technology Division. Herb holds business degrees from George Washington University (DBA)
and New York University (MBA). He earned his first degree in electrical engineering (BSEE) from The Cooper Union. His 1966
doctoral dissertation about the birth of the microchip is considered a seminal contribution to the history of 20th
century technology.
Since Herb’s stroke
The Kleimans
in 2004 co-authored an article for Stroke Smart, a publication of the National Stroke Association, titled “One
Stroke, Two Survivors. That article later became the title of our book. Herb contributes periodic op-ed articles and commentaries
for Crain’s Cleveland Business. A front-page news story in The Cleveland Plain Dealer (May 4, 2004) featured the Kleimans and the strategies they recommend to reduce the cost of
prescription drugs.
They
actively participate in pilot therapy programs developed by the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in conjunction
with the Baltimore VA Hospital, National Institutes of Health, and Claude D. Pepper Legacy Programs. They are also members
of the MetroHealth and Cleveland Stroke Clubs and the Peter B. Lewis Therapy and Fitness
Center, all in Cleveland. The latter
is a division of the Menorah Park Center
for Senior Living.
